Is it really only 4 weeks Away? (Sussex County - June 2008) Its hard to believe that in just four weeks, teams from all over the world will be rolling in to Roxanna for the Little League Senior Softball World Series.
Putting this thing on is a GIANT undertaking, and without the more than 100 volunteers, we'd never get everyone housed, fed, and practiced. We wouldn't be able to control the crounds [security], groom the fields [groundscrew] or keep the scoring current [pressbox].
Scorekeepers have to rounded up, announcers scheduled, concession stand workers, the cleaning crew, there's a big need for a lot of help. Even transportation around the county and to and from airports is a big project.
And it all has to be organized, coordinated, and in place by August 2nd.
(And we haven't even talked about ESPN's live broadcast on Saturday, August 9th)
The Sussex Countian's Jeff Mitchell has a few more quotes about the World Series in this article: Southern Sussex Prepares for Softball World Series.
Rick Roth in The Wave also has more about the World Series -Youngsters get their Shot at Glory.
| Another World Series Alum Earns All State{June 2008) Laurel's Alexis Oliphant was selected as one of four Delaware All State Softball outfielders by Delaware's Head Softball Coaches this week.
Oliphant, playing on the District 3 Host Team with her two sisters (Kelsey and Taylor), anchored the outfield for Laurel on last year's quarter final team, scoring 4 runs, and blasting a home run during the five game series.
Playing for her home town Laurel High School, Alexis was also selected first team All-Henlopen Conference last month.
Laurel Little League is probably the favorite to return to the Little League Senior Softball World Series in Roxanna, Delaware in August.
A team from Laurel has been the Host team for 3 of the last 4 years in the August classic which is held August 2-9 at the Lower Sussex Little League complex in Roxanna.
| World Series Alums Figure in Cape Henlopen All-Conference Team(May 2008) The Little League Senior Softball World Series keeps turning out Cape Henlopen All Conference Selections.
This year, five members of the 2007 District III Champion Laurel Little League also earned recognition for their play in Sussex County High School Softball.
Earning First Team All Conference honors from Laurel were Alexis and Kelsey Oliphant, Alexis as an outfielder and Kelsey as an at-large selection.
Second Team members were Jenna Allen [2nd base - Sussex Tech], Jenna Cahall [3rd base - Laurel] and Stephanie Wheatley [At-large Laurel].
Also on the list were 3 players from the 2006 Nanticoke Little League team that played in the final game. Jenna Adkins of Seaford, Kelsey Riggleman at-large from Seaford, and Amanda Swift, Outfield, Seaford HS.
That is eight World Series "alumae" on the Henlopen All-Conference team, once again proving the Series' value as a great showcase for Sussex County Softball talent.
The 2008 Series starts August 3rd at the Lower Sussex Little League complex in Roxanna, Delaware.
| Kick Off BreakfastThe Georgia House in Millsboro was packed Saturday Morning as the District 3 Little League kicked off their 5th Little League Senior Softball World Series.
District 3 Administrator Martin Donovan announced that ESPN or ESPN2 would be broadcasting the final game live and that about 250,000 softball fans watched the tape replay two weeks later.
Delaware Governor Ruth Ann Minner attended an early session with the executive board, and promised to continue the State of Delaware's support for the event. Earlier in the year, the Carl M. Freeman companies had extended their long standing support agreement with the Little League.
Attendees heard from several of last year's players and coaches, Manager Jeff Evans, coach Rodney Hearne, Team Mom Stacy Hearne and two of the players, Brooke Evans and Jeanna Cahall from 3rd place finisher Laurel Little League, as well as Umpire Ron Adkins and others involved with on field play. Delmarva TV personality [and big softball fan] Scotty Amarine talked about the Series' impact on Delaware.
The Senior Softball World series is only one of 8 Little League sponsored events that finish each age group's season. It is scheduled at the Lower Sussex Little League complex in Roxanna, Delaware, August 3-9, 2008.
